Description

Polyridim 1.0 is an exploration of layered rhythm, independence, and organized chaos, built almost entirely from short, repeating cells. The piece begins sparsely, with the piccolo presenting a two-bar phrase that establishes both pulse and attitude. One by one, additional woodwinds enter, each with their own distinct two-bar idea. Rather than blending immediately, these phrases coexist, stacking on top of one another to create a dense web of interlocking rhythms. As the texture fills out, clarity gives way to complexity, inviting the listener to hear rhythm as a shifting, living structure rather than a single unified groove.

At the center of this opening is the tenor saxophone’s prominent 4:3 polyrhythm, often memorably described by performers as the “pass the goddamn butter” rhythm. This figure acts as an anchor amid the surrounding activity, both humorous and technically demanding, highlighting the playful but precise nature of the work. By the time the full woodwind section is engaged, the ensemble functions like a rhythmic machine in which every part operates independently yet contributes to a larger, cohesive motion.

About halfway through the piece, the roles abruptly reverse. The brass assume the complex rhythmic material, taking over the driving polyrhythms, while the woodwinds shift into sustained, chordal writing. This sudden textural inversion reframes the earlier material, allowing the same ideas to be heard from a new perspective and emphasizing the ensemble’s collective flexibility.

The final section moves from G minor into D minor, maintaining the layered phrases across both brass and woodwinds. Within this energetic framework, select instruments emerge with a chorale-like melody, providing moments of harmonic grounding and contrast against the persistent rhythmic motion. Tension continues to build until the music finally resolves into F major, delivering a bright and satisfying conclusion. In the last bar, the entire ensemble unites rhythmically for the first time, all proclaiming the iconic “pass the goddamn butter” rhythm together—a unifying gesture that brings Polyridim 1.0 to an emphatic and playful close.
